Hot Topic: M/M vs. F/F

Today's Topic:
M/M vs. F/F
There seems to be a flood of authors writing M/M romance these days, and yet there are still quite a few epublishers who won't accept F/F love stories. Why do you think that is?

Well, from a personal stand point as a card-carrying member of the female of the species, I am not only cock-centered, but I am jealous about. I love to read about two hot guys being together. Personally again, I may or may not have a mental tic that encourages me to view most women (except matronly females) as being competition or as invisible. I consider myself somewhat of a feminist and if want to think of men as playthings for my wicked imagination, and I often do, then that's fine. But me personally, I have little interest in other females, unless its a domination, fling, sort of way (see: jealousy issues). I have friends who are lesbians but personally and sometimes enviously, my focus remains on boys and not always with girls. Girls are my fellow soldiers, maybe good for some in the trenchs action, but when you get off the battlefield, then you find a male wench and settle down,or hit the male brothel IMHO.

I think it's about what sells. Sure f/f has its own niche but at the moment it's not nearly as big as m/m and it's still pretty new. Also, and I've been keeping tabs, on sites like ARe. I keep a track of what's on the bestsellers list. At ALL times there is a m/m book or two. Honestly, there was never NOT a time when m/m was not on the best sellers list from my observation. In the time I have been watching it I have never seen a f/f book on the list and I know there are some being sold at ARe. That being said, I have to conclude that with women being the largest consumers of ebooks, it's obvious which one we find more appealing. *not speaking for everyone of course, but the percentage seems pretty high* Speaking as an author I can't write f/f. Heck, I tried writing f/m and the female morphed into a guy. lol

Sage,

I just finished a menage with a female who behaves very much like a male, very dominating and agressive. It surprised me that I was able to sucessfully right a MF, but still again the influences of MM...(ok seme/uke)shinned through alot. Originally, I had planned a scene where the main character dominated a female but I just couldn't write it. I wouldn't have done it justice, and lesbians would know it immediately and say that she (the character) was just passing time until a male arrived. So, I scrapped that idea.

I, too, recently blogged about this. Mya basically nailed it. Our audience is predominantly het female, and it seems fairly natural that women who are into eroticism "love to read about two hot guys being together".

I know I do!

And I've found that I love writing it! Even in a sequel I'm working on for another publisher, I have several characters who are either bi or gay and I think I actually enjoy their love scenes the most!
I'm focusing on m/m even more because I guess it releases the inner gay guy in me! ;~D
