When was the last time you read an intimate scene in an erotic romance novel when the woman/man spit instead of swallowed? Personally, I can't remember the last time. Why do you think that is?

You know, I did read a book recently where they had a scene where the guy(I think) spit rather than swallowed. I laughed when I read it, because I was thinking 'Dude, I feel you!'
I have to say the whole 'yum yum tastes so good' thing does make me smile a bit when I see it used. I think I'd be happy with that being left out, although I have no qualms with the concept of the one coming being happy the person did swallow. Go figure.
Didn't someone do some experiments about taste at some point? Something about having to have had eaten copious amounts of certain fruits to make come taste more palatable?
Yeah, I think so, Anne. I believe it was pineapple juice, or something, that made it sweeter. Have you ever tasted pineapple juice though? Bleh...
Of course, you have to wonder about the other side of the coin as well. I can't imagine women taste any better. Maybe I'll use that for next weeks hot topic post. *laughing*

I would rather read about swallowing than spitting. It's true that in real life more people are not prone to swallowing, but if you're going to have it in your mouth, like Amanda said, why spit it out? Of course I think the best thing to do if you're not going to swallow is to have the other person warn you so that you could uh... pull back. Finish off with a nice HJ. lol

I think it can be portrayed as something very intimate, which I find arousing. I have a scene in "The Sweet Flag" (an m/m story) that I like:
His hand slid down my arm and around the front to my cock and lingered there, waiting for permission to touch. He kissed me behind my ear and whispered. “Let me touch you.”
For answer, I pressed my backside against his thick erection, twined my fingers with his, and placed his hand on my penis. I think that spitting would be a bigger turn off. Actually, I love Amber's scene because it's creates a very clear picture of her characters. Maybe that's the best way to present a scene like this: Don't just have them swallow. Put some thought into the situation.
I personally don't like to read whether or not they swallow or spit out, and I'm equally vague about that aspect in my own writing. You know what they're doing, you know they are enjoying it, but I just gloss over such graphic (and unneeded) details.
I actually read a romance book this weekend that had the heroine spitting, and the guy understanding... which I thought was wierd at first, because the other books Ive read they the same author has the girl swallowing quite enthusiastically. Personnaly... I would much rather spit, but as long as he gets there quickly, and I have a drink standing by I can stand it. Truth though, I do usually finish off with a HJ instead.
And I have to say... the egg white image I could have seriously done without. eeew. :)
When writing, I always have my characters swallow...probably because it's what I always do personally. It's an intimate act, I adore doing it, & I know that all of my partners (past and present) were always blown away (no pun intended...lol) that I had swallowed - claiming that no one has ever done that before. Poor babies! ;)
Yeah... I have to confess to being a swallower as well (with my safe partner of course) and so far I've assumed my characters are too. But I REALLY agree with the food thing. Isn't it asparagus that can make it really foul? Or 'funky spunk' as Samantha said in SATC?
I feel kinda weird jumping in here 'cause I'm not an author, but oh well. Amanda invited me. :) I don't think I've ever read about anyone spitting. I've personally never done it myself. It feels like having a mouth full of snot, and I don't want to keep it in my mouth long enough to be able to spit it out. Plus I think men get their feelings hurt when their partners spit. I know I'd be insulted if my husband insisted on rinsing his mouth out and brushing his teeth every time he pleasured me that way. Sheesh. LOL
I don't think I've ever said, "YUM" about come, but I've never hated the taste. I know (from very limited experience, way before I got married) that some guys taste slightly more bitter than others, and some slightly sweeter or saltier, but there's not enough of a difference that I'd say some taste "better" or "worse".
What gets me is the stories in the gay porn anthologies is when one dude swallows 5 or 6 guys' come. BLEHHHHH.

Had to jump in when I saw Jeanne's most excellent excerpt.
Two people "tasting" each other is indeed an intimate act. Spitting out ejaculate just seems rude, almost to the point of being insulting. So my characters, male and female, swallow. And swallow. And swallow some more. Eagerly.
Besides (ahem), that stuff is slick enough to slide right down the ol' gullet with very little effort on the swallower's part and a minimum of aftertaste -- at least according to the person who told me this (ahem-ahem).

I prefer to read swallowing as opposed to spitting. I have read a few scenes where the person sucking swallowed the initial shot and then backed off to finish with just a hand. That was fine and more acceptable than spitting.
I primarily read M/M books, and if you're willing to get up close and personal with your mouth and someone elses pooper, well what's a little semen between friends? It seems a funny line to draw at that point.
I too find the "yum yum tastes so good" (HA!) dialogue a big eye-roller and I generally have to skim a bit to get past it. I mean, I've never really had a problem with the taste myself, but it's not like I've ever thought "Mmmmmm I'd like an extra helping of spooge, please" either.

But I'm with Debby - Tried it many times and UGH---I have this mental block...so all my characters take enjoyment of doing what I can't :D
