Diversify, Diversify

In my sometime role as Mentor-to-the-Future-Stars, I'm frequently asked to make judgement calls on a variety of publishing career issues. If I had to condense all my advice into one word it would be: Diversify. There are three distinct areas in which I think a canny writer will diversify her/his resources. You will find different viewpoints on this, but this is what works for me -- speaking as someone who has been writing and publishing successfully for over a decade.

I) Try different things. I'm not saying write a bunch of crap you don't enjoy just for the money, I'm saying don't be afraid to try something new, to push yourself out of your comfort zone. It'll make you a stronger writer -- and you'll find new readers. I write strictly in the M/M sub-genre -- usually within a mystery or romantic suspense framework, but this last year I've branched out and started writing action-adventure. And guess what? I really enjoyed it. It was fun and fresh, and we all need to keep it fun and fresh. Last month I pushed myself a little further and wrote my first romance with an anti-hero protagonist. Sure, one or two readers were a little uncomfortable with Mark Hardwicke, the narrator of I Spy Something Bloody but mostly what I'm hearing is it's the best thing I've done with the exception of the Adrien English series.

II) Try different formats. Electronic publishing offers everything from flash fiction to full-size novels. Try your hand at these different art forms. Sure, you're going to be better at some than others -- and you'll want to know your strengths and weaknesses -- but don't be afraid to try anything and everything. The more you write, the more you hear from readers, the better you get.

Also...speaking of different formats, print and ebook audiences are not necessarily the same. Male readers, for example, still typically buy mostly in print from brick and mortar booksellers. Not all successful ebooks translate into viable print projects, but it's certainly worth considering. Break into print by submitting to anthologies -- watch for submission requests from the big houses in your genre

III) Try different publishers. I'm not saying try every fly-by-night operation that opens up a website. Pick your publishers carefully. You want a publisher with a good track record -- that means stability and good word-of-mouth from both readers and other writers. You want a company that turns out a quality product. Remember, you're looking for a longterm partner in your writing career. That means you need a publisher who is at least as interested in your success and happiness as they are in their own bottom line. When you find that partner, do your part to keep the relationship healthy, but never put all your eggs in one basket. Different publishing houses have different reading lists. There will always be some crossover: M/M readers will often buy primarily from two or three houses but distrust smaller, lesser publishers until they've established some kind of track record. Your job as a writer is to get readers so addicted to your work that they'll follow you and your brand of fiction anywhere, regardless of where you publish -- but that doesn't happen overnight. It takes time and a lot of work -- and a lot of writing.

So Josh, taking your advice of trying different things one step further, would you ever consider writing m/f romances if you thought your readership would expand to this genre? Not that I read a lot of f/m books and I don't read any f/f books, but perhaps your "romance" readers would like you to venture into this genre.

I loved I Spy Something Bloody but it wasn't because you were exploring writing action-adventure - I loved Mark who was such a complex character, along the lines of Jake in Adrien English. I guess I love bastards :)

Re writers checking out different pubs., a lot of writers have been screwed by smaller publishers that closed for different reasons (not properly financed in the first place, one person operations, illness (DEP} etc. I guess they (the authors) have to kiss a lot of frogs before they find the right prince.

What was my original question again? Oh yes, would you consider writing f/m romance in addition to mysteries and action adventure?

Well hey there, I guess I'd be the only one on the planet who still thinks neither Mark nor Jake are actual, honest to goodness bastards but my little ship is sinking fast so I'm holding the HUMAN flag really high so it doesn't get wet until I drown.

I'm so glad you're talking about diversification. I think we all get stuck in ruts. Or worse, we think we can't do something so we don't try. I subscribe to the bug on a windshield theory of life, if you throw yourself at something and you survive it, it's a good day.

Anyway, 'I Spy Something Bloody' was my favorite thing besides the Adrien English series. (if I haven't said that, it's because I usually wait a week or two and read something again before I blog.)

OMGosh. You don't suppose I just like these so called 'bastards' because I'm as mixed up, narcissistic, and immature as they are?!! Oh NO!

on that note, missy, my husband would like to sincerely thank you for my recent obsession in getting everything done this week. laundry is piled everywhere, the children wander, filthy and shoeless....

I heart you big time. We should do a thing. Wait...am I effing around on josh's post again?

SEW SORRY.

Straight romance? I mean romance that didn't have a mystery or some kind of other plot? No. I have no interest in writing plain old romance.

As far as m/f...sure, if certain characters really grabbed me and I had a story that was best suited to the male/female dynamic.

It's not like I set out to only write gay characters, it just happens that these are the stories that interest me now.

I have to enjoy what I'm writing -- that's pretty much the only requirement.

Well, you're in good company in that case.

I don't think they're bastards either, actually. I think they're both doing the best they can under the circumstances.

Which is true of most of us.

Someone needs to.

Thanks for answering my question Josh re writing f/m romances. I was referring to a storyline that interested you but with male/female characters and your response was quite clear.

Whether or not Jake and Mark are "bastards" is something I'm sure fans of these books will debate ad nauseum :)

Josh, if you were to diversify, say to another type of writing or something, like, film scripts... AHEM (Did angels sing just now?) What would you like to see yourself doing, ten years from now. How do you see yourself doing it?

Lisabea,
My husband says welcome to my fricking world. We should do a thing. Any ideas? It's amazing what one can accomplish before social services comes knocking.

Reading. Writing fan fiction. *g*

Seriously, I'd like to do about two novels a year and spend the rest of the time researching and reading and actually enjoying life a little.

Screen plays...you know, I've tried that. It's excellent training for pruning yourself, but it leaves out all the parts I most love about storytelling.

I wouldn't mind trying again, though if so called upon by higher powers.

Diversify...
Yep, decided to do that this year. I had a story I wanted to tell and a new focus I wanted to explore.
I'm looking at a busier year than I have ever had...and I'm loving it!
Actually, I owe Josh a great deal of thanks for his gentle encouragement.
Thanks, Josh

Lauralyn said...

And I would tell you that if you left fiction writing for screenplay writing entirely that would cause a rift in the time-space continuum and you'd have outraged screaming masses on your porch. (Where did I put my bullhorn.) Have I mentioned lately how very much I like your prose? (Have you mentioned lately how you think I have no literary insight? Oh. That would be a yeah. What does that say about us. *g*)

Okay even if no higher power calls on you, but someone were to ask you to adapt your AE series... PLEASE do it. PLEASE. I would love a film of that. LOVE.

I think you should prep a pitch and get it made into films. That way you could write a how-to on getting your pitch prepped and making it to the right people. Mentoring that process...

I smell win-win.

Nothing to do with the topic at hand, but...

Why do we have to pick a favorite again? It's a bit like picking out ice cream flavors for me. I love ice cream and I'd go for something with peanut butter first, but I'm not turning down mint chocolate chip either. I just love them all, I do.

Adrien is everyone else's peanut butter, so I don't know if I'd make him mine. Like if I were picking out a dog, I'd go to the pound and come home with the ugly mutt with three legs and one eye. It's how I roll.

Adrien has so much love already so I'm going to go with Tim as my peanut butter and my one eyed, three legged mutt. He was such a hot mess, a lot like me actually, only he has the excuse of being a raging alcoholic. Kind of can't wait for the sequel, whenever that happens (and where...my vote is for Ireland and a castle).

I'm hoping what I just threw out here made sense to someone. I can't wait til I can go home and get my laptop. It's like half of my brain is missing.

So if that didn't make sense, then what I really meant to say is: if you guys do a thing, I want in. Unless it's a Cali/LA thing and then I will pout from the wilds of upstate NY.

Dakota Flint said...

Oooooh, and I'll lead the campaign to get James McAvoy to play Adrien. Hey we're dreamin' big here people!

And I have my Jake all picked out, but the LBs might mutiny if it's not Russell Crowe. (who I'm all kinds of bleh about)

lisabea said...

I heard that Ms.DF....He was bitchin' back before the donuts. I swear. I have a lovely RC festival on my blog that is yum yum yummy.

Oh look, the angels are here!

Hey I have this terrific idea and we should..uh...do a big kick off for a certain book coming out in the near future. We can invite all the usual suspects and have us a hootenanny. Although, Ms. DF Russell Crowe may be there.

LL~We should do a post on that book by Maxfield. Word on the street is it's quite the thing.

Hi Josh! Nice post.

Dakota Flint said...

LB- Wow, for once I'm ahead of the game. I kind of made a couple things for a certain book release already (cuz I thought it was coming out when I'd be at the beach for three weeks so I was getting my shizzle together EARLY but le sigh it's not Aug. anymore). We should have a vote or something.

And if you hopped over to LJ, some really long-winded fool already squeed all over her lj like an excited puppy for ZAM! (as I've christened Maxfield in my head).

And if you bring Russ, can I bring G. Butler?

Oh and nice post btw, Josh. Very helpful. I'm taking notes, I swear. *g*

I was thinking a huge ManLove Monday special....with Goof Off Friends and the singing (or at least drinking) angels, fan(yon)s, and perhaps some give aways. IDK.

I read that and will comment...the husband is here staring at me and I've told him I'm working on my word count goal.

off to swim.

Uh.Josh. Mentor-to-the-future-stars. I like it. Has a nice ring to it.

Hello other angels, have we scared off Charlie? Where's Bos, cause I could use someone to stand next to me who'll make me look young and hot by comparison.

Hey you to. I'm getting my Squee all ready for you know what, no matter what.

Who was the blond from "The Trip?" Anyone know? Because he'd make a pretty good Adrien.

I like Russell Crowe but I'm thinking I'm going to need more twinkly eyes. Maybe he twinkles... but can he sparkle. That's what I'd want to know. I'm definitely going to need some kind of casting control here.

LB, DF, What's in the middle, we could get together and brew up... I mean come up with a plan.

OK let's dooooo eeeeeet! MLM in September...gifts and ridiculous arts and crafts items....email me.

Hi LB
I thought there was already a big kick off planned for the DIK Island where Josh is going to be for an entire week in September to tell us about all of his upcoming books. Is this hootenanny like a street party where everyone is invited? Can I bring my Adrien thermos?

Btw Josh on a more serious note, your earlier comments on diversifying were really insightful

You're welcome, Jeanne. I'm glad I could be of help.

That would be fun, wouldn't it? But it's not the way it generally works. Usually they handpick someone who doesn't know the work and likes it less to write the screenplay. I could live with that if they paid me properly. *g*

Tackling Tim again would be work. Not that Adrien isn't, but at least Adrien himself is easily accessible to me. Tim...I have to struggle to get in touch with my inner alkie.

I'm quite partial to Russell, even post-doughnut.

Yes, indeed you should. It sounds like it's going to be a huge hit for Ms. M. I'm longing to read it, I just can't cheat and put it to the head of the line with everything else I've promised to read for the past nnnn months.

Hi Josh! Nice post.

Danka, darlink.

Oh, dear heavens, Global Warming, Gasoline prices, American identity abroad. I have enough to worry about. You just read stuff you like. I can imagine being a mentor is rather like being Dr. Frankenstein. That would make me... well... you know.

I can't imagine NOT liking it. From all I hear it's funny and engaging and pretty much right up my alley. I'm looking forward to it.

Yes, I knocked out a good chunk today. Poor Adrien. *g*

Lauralyn said...

Aw. You are such a great mentor. Did I tell you that your conflict post made me rewrite that after I subbed it? I still have a long, long way to go, but if it weren't for you, I wouldn't understand the first thing about conflict. (Okay, maybe that sounds bad.) I even recommended Dakota look at that post. I've heard a lot of people explain internal and external conflict, but never as clearly and concisely as you did.

Plus, you're awfully funny yourself. You make learning fun! *buy Man oh Man wherever excellent books are sold* Thanks for being all generous and mentoriffic and, you know, you.
