Hot Topic: How explicit do you like it?

Today's topic:
Fictional Sex Scenes

When it comes to your reading material, how explicit do you like the intimate scenes? I'll admit, I'm a dirty girl. I want it to be so realistic I can smell the sweat. :) As the people who read my work can attest, I have a very hard time writing a short sex scene. All five senses need to sparked, and then some.

So what do you think? Should the details be kept to a bare minimum, or be revealed in all their naked glory?

Interesting question. Up until now the romances I've written have been quite explicit but I actually don't care when reading. That is the characters need to engage me and/or it has to have a great story. Otherwise, no matter how great the sex scenes are, for me I find I grow disinterested.

I've just read a great book that was far from explicit and yet the writing was so good I was gripped with every page and the sex was equally amazing even though mild. I also think sometimes the tone of the story dictates how explicit the story needs to be.

I can go either way, myself. It all depends on the story.

I agree. Even a mild scene can be enthralling when it is well written, but the most explicit scenes can't hold my interest if they are poorly done. That said yes i like explicit scenes, if i wanted to read something PG i wouldn't read erotica.

For the most part, I want that bedroom door open. I want the detail.

Few authors to date have riveted me with the bedroom door closed and not being explicit. It can be done but on the whole, I prefer explicit.
